I’m interested in measuring the energy consumption across several types of urban zones throughout the Brooklyn area.
For Big Spaces I went through Greenpoint and looked at how zoning had affected various parts of the neighborhood over the past 20 or so years. I’m interested in how these mandates affect energy consumption.
I want to know how that specific energy consumption, and what specific types of sourcing of power have to do with how those regions develop. Whether it’s the industrial zones with the water treatment plants or the residential areas that have transitioned from car repair garages to commercial stores and apartments, I want to know how the initial power infrastructure has had an impact on the development in those areas.
I plan on determining the energy consumption from these places and determining how that has changed with time and different occupiers of those spaces.
For my measurement project I wanted to dive into geospatial usage of energy within specific zoning areas within Brooklyn. I wanted to compare what parts of New York are producing energy, what kinds and where that specific power is being diverted to.
To facilitate this research I found a number of useful papers and map tools to help me answer the questions I have been looking into. The QSEL Urban energy usage map depicts every block of New Yorks annual energy usage. I plan to use this as my key information resource and supplement it with some of the other links — Overlaying a variety of spatial information on zones of Brooklyn will reveal interesting insights.
I’ve taken some notes about the resources and links below:
NYC Annual Energy Consumption by Block
Estimated Total Annual Building Energy Consumption at the Block and Lot Level for New York City
A map API that interactively lets me find the annual energy consumptions of buildings within the NY power grid. Will be useful in understanding where a lot of the energy demand is coming from. Spoiler its most of Manhattan.
Columbia University Spatial Distribution of Urban Energy Usage
The publication paper for the map api above. Goes into detail about their measurement and data acquisition. While this resource is very helpful, it doesn’t include anything about specific zoning regulations within NY
NYC Water and Energy Performance Map
NYC Energy and Water Performance Map
Interactive performance map of NY in terms of water and energy usage. Will help supplement findings from the above spatial map tools
Power Stations in NY
List of power stations in New York - Wikipedia
Table of power stations within NY. Provides information about the plant type, how many mWh it is producing and when/where is was established. Will use this to reference where energy is being produced within the state.
Power Plants in the United States
This Map Shows Every Power Plant in the United States
Less useful than the above link but does contain interesting trends on a national level
